NEW - menopause education
Menopause and peri-menopause are natural stages of life that can affect both physical and emotional wellbeing. During this time, changes in hormone levels — particularly oestrogen and progesterone — can lead to a wide range of symptoms that vary between individuals.
Many women describe feeling “not themselves”, experiencing low mood, tearfulness, irritability, fatigue and changes in sleep. These symptoms are recognised features of the menopausal transition and can significantly impact quality of life, relationships, and work.
Commonly reported emotional and cognitive symptoms may include:
- Low mood or mood changes
- Increased emotional sensitivity or tearfulness
- Reduced stress tolerance
- Brain fog or difficulty concentrating
- Sleep disturbance and fatigue
These experiences are well recognised during peri-menopause and menopause and are influenced by hormonal changes alongside life stage factors.During this transition, many women notice changes in their body, including:
Changes in weight distribution (often abdominal)
Reduced muscle mass
Changes in energy levels
Altered metabolism and appetite patterns
Evidence suggests these changes are influenced by hormonal fluctuations, age-related changes in muscle mass, and natural metabolic shifts. However, experiences vary significantly between individuals.
Some women find that weight becomes harder to manage during this stage of life, even without major changes in diet or activity.
This is thought to be due to a combination of:
Hormonal changes affecting fat distribution
Reduced muscle mass with age
Changes in resting metabolic rate
Sleep disruption and stress levels
Support with lifestyle, nutrition, and where appropriate, medical treatment can be helpful in managing these changes.
A structured consultation can help explore symptoms in context and identify suitable management options.
This may include:
Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) where appropriate
Lifestyle and weight management support
Sleep and mood optimisation strategies
Non-hormonal treatment options if required
Exclusion of other causes such as thyroid dysfunction or anaemia
If symptoms are affecting daily life, wellbeing, or relationships, it may be helpful to seek clinical advice.
Care is individualised and focuses on safe, evidence-based management tailored to your needs.
